The Search is On For Singapore’s Next Top Coffee Barista!

This year, the winner of the Singapore National Barista Championship (SNBC) 2008 will represent Singapore in the World Barista Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark. All competitors in SNBC 2007 are encouraged to participate in this year’s competition again.

Eleen Cai, the winner of SNBC 2007, represented the country in the WBC 2007 and came in a respectable 30 out of 45. She said, “WBC has been an eye opening experience. I am amazed by the passion and enthusiasm the baristas from around the world are putting into their coffee. It has changed my perspective about the coffee craft and it has been a great learning curve. I hope to share this wonderful experience with other baristas in Singapore.”

Right at the centre of the gourmet coffee business is the barista.

A barista is something akin to a sommelier. As a sommelier understands the grapes and different varietals of wine, so the barista understands the coffee bean, the rudiments of how the bean is roasted, how the bean is ground and that special form of alchemy by which the coffee ground becomes an espresso or a cappuccino or a latte. The job calls for knowledge, it calls for finesse and sometimes a little flamboyance doesn’t do any harm either.

The barista is the difference between a really good cup of correctly prepared coffee and a cup of indifferently prepared, over-priced swill. That is why we believe that the barista is the heart and soul of coffee culture.
